The Mechelen transit camp and the story of the 20th convoy
On 19 April 1943, the 20th deportation convoy from Belgium to Auschwitz left the Mechelen transit camp with 1,631 Jewish men and women. 236 of the deportees managed to jump from the train thanks to an act of resistance that was unique in Nazi-occupied Western Europe.
Historians Laurence Schram (Kazerne Dossin) and Daniel Thilman (C2DH), as well as Henri Juda (second-generation witness) will discuss the history of the camp, the 20th convoy and the fate of the Jews from Luxembourg who were deported to Mechelen.
